2) UPDATE ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN  :

François Doyon La Rochelle:

In our first topic today, we will try to help our listeners deal with the anxiety brought on by the fact that markets are reaching new record highs.  The headlines in the financial media are often alarming when this happens, suggesting that the markets have nowhere to go from here but down. Such headlines negatively impact investors’ emotional behaviors, influencing their decision-making process.

James Parkyn:

Indeed, François, this type of market often triggers questions from clients. On the one hand, clients are happy that the markets are up but on the other hand, they wonder if they should be selling assets to avoid the inevitable upcoming downturn. Also, when markets are making new highs, it is emotionally more difficult for investors to take the plunge and deploy new funds. These are typical investor behavioral challenges when markets are setting new highs, that often lead to mistakes that reduce their long-term returns. …Read More

François Doyon La Rochelle:  In our first topic today, we will review the performance of the Magnificent Seven stocks and how they have done year-to-date in 2024. We will ask ourselves if it has been worthwhile to chase these high-flying stocks.

James Parkyn:  Yes François, but before we go into the details, I just want to give our listeners a quick reminder of where that catchy label for these high-performing stocks came from. They may remember that at first, in the mid-2010s, the acronym FANG, popularized by Jim Cramer on his CNBC TV Mad Money show, was used to label a group of stocks namely, Facebook (now Meta), Amazon, Netflix, and Google (now Alphabet), who had spectacular growth and performance.  Later in that decade, Apple was added to the group and another A was added to the label FAANG. Then, early in 2023, the term FAANG was replaced by The Magnificent Seven to label a group of seven mega-cap market-leading stocks. The companies in that group are Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. You will notice Microsoft and Nvidia were added but Netflix is no longer there. …Read More

1) UPDATE ON THE RESULTS OF ACTIVE VS PASSIVE MANAGEMENT FOR 2023  :

François Doyon La Rochelle: For our first topic today, as we have done in the past, we will look at the results of active management versus passive or in other words, indexing strategies for 2023. This is an annual exercise that we perform. We look at the data from a report produced by S&P Dow Jones Indices which measures the results of the S&P Indices versus active funds. This report is called the SPIVA Canada Scorecard.

James Parkyn : Yes François, in addition to the SPIVA Scorecard we also look at the results of the Morningstar U.S. Active vs Passive Barometer report which compares the performance of active funds against their respective passive peers. Although this is a U.S.-centric report, we feel that it is more complete than the SPIVA report since Morningstar measures the rate of success of active managers against the results of actual passive funds and not indexes. …Read More
